Brief History of Edgware Adath Yisroel Congregation
November 1939 A private minyan for Shabbat services established by Mr Harris Chaimofsky in his house in The Drive.
April 1940 The minyan came under the wing of the Adath movement, on the initiative of Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld, and named Edgware Adath Yisroel Congregation (EAYC), with Rabbi Ephraim Konigshofer as its first Rav, moving to new rented premises in Broadfields Avenue.
1943 The shul transferred to its recently-bought semi-detached house at 21 St Margaret’s Road. Rabbi Konigshofer had moved to Stamford Hill, and Rabbi Abraham Babad (later of Sunderland) appointed.
1948 Rabbi Yaacov Heshel was appointed as Rav until his passing in 1971.
1954 A house and land at 261 Hale Lane purchased jointly by the Jewish Secondary School Movement (JSSM) and the shul. The shul was temporarily housed in the very dilapidated Tennis pavilion.
1960 Shul rehoused in purpose-built premises, sharing the site with Edgware Hasmonean Preparatory School (which ultimately closed in 1992).
1973 Appointment of Rabbi Kahan after the death of Rabbi Heshel.
1977 – 1979 The shul was legally confirmed as an independent congregation, not affiliated with the Adath Yisroel other than for burial rights with the Adath Yisroel Burial Society.
1983 Expansion of shul site with addition of a new hall/ladies section as membership numbers continue to grow.
1990 Appointment of Rabbi Zvi Lieberman.
2000 Foundation of the EAYC Nursery to meet the needs of growing numbers of young families joining the Shul.
2007 Launch of the Edgware Eruv, a community-wide project led by EAYC and its Rav. Also the year that Edgware Jewish Primary School – today Beit Shvidler Primary School – was founded by members of EAYC as a JSSM school, and housed in shul premises.
2009 Foundation of the EAYC Youth minyan.
2011 The EAYC Shul moved into refurbished premises across the road at 265 Hale Lane, while the JSSM together with Beit Shvidler governors began the rebuilding of the site at 261 Hale Lane, as a purpose-built school.
2014 A Sephardi minyan welcomed into the community as an integral part of EAYC.
